Quotes to Entrepreneur By: Oldies Edition
When times are hard, and these times certainly qualify, it’s helpful to return to first principles. And so as we face Biblical rain and emerging tribalism, I find comfort in the advice of the ancient sages; in this case, I’m harkening all the way back to Plato, the Big Daddy of Greek philosophers. It is truly remarkable how many things he (and his conjured spokes-philosopher Socrates) said that resonate now as we wrestle with the problems of the so-called modern world.
Here is a selection of wisdom from the oldies:
“A good decision is based on knowledge and not on numbers.”
“There is no harm in repeating a good thing.”
“Truth is the beginning of every good to the gods, and of every good to man.”
“Thinking — the talking of the soul with itself.”
“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”
“Knowledge without justice ought to be called cunning rather than wisdom.”
“The first and greatest victory is to conquer yourself; to be conquered by yourself is of all things most shameful and vile.”
“All men are by nature equal, made all of the same earth by one workman.”
“Opinion is the medium between knowledge and ignorance.”
“Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.”
“The measure of a man is what he does with power.”
“The untrained mind keeps up a running commentary, labelling everything, judging everything. Best to ignore that commentary. Don’t argue or resist, just ignore. Deprived of attention and interest, this voice gets quieter and quieter and eventually just shuts up.”
And, of course: “Necessity is the mother of invention.”
