Food is a foundational component of Delightful Moments. It is a road toward or away from health. It is present in community, socialization, and ritual. Food is one of the ways society represents and passes down cultural mores. Increasingly, via lab-based food and the microbiome, food is coming to be seen as the initial step in the prevention and care process.

Food is medicine. Food is mood. Given its intrinsic cultural roots, and the wide range of science, Food can be interpreted as Delightful Moment experiences in many ways.

For instance:

  • Snack/beverages with a focus on healthiness, purity, high quality and taste, sense of individuality, and/or habituality. These can have a higher price point for their “luxurious” and indulgent feeling.
  • “Green” food and waste prevention that create a sense of connection with the community (local farmers), connection with your locality (understanding climate change from the perspective of “in-season” crops and travel-time), and thus creating a sense of belonging.
  • Shared experiences related to food such as communal cooking or farming.

For Joyance Partners to be the best fund in Delightful Moments, we must be the best fund at understanding the radical edge of food innovation and science.

For H2 2020, we should invest in:

  • Alternative proteins and plant-based meat for humans and animals
  • Lab-grown meat for human and pet consumption
  • Food waste prevention, as well as waste from one system used as input to another
  • Coffee/tea/water
  • New or “novel” foods
  • DNA-based nutrition
  • Food for special medical purposes

Previously, in our funds, food and tech have been ingredients kept in separate containers. Now, they are intermingling. We are experiencing an exciting new tech-driven revolution in food, opening new ways for us to eat ourselves away from anxiety and toward joy.
